A Case Control Study of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) Persistent Infection (PI) in Betsukai, Hokkaido, Japan OAK
KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; TAJIMA, Motoshi;
The Betsukai town office implemented bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) preventive activities (i.e., vaccination and surveillance) in 2006. Using bulk tank milk screening followed by individual blood tests using a Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) method, persistent infection (PI) cattle were detected and eliminated from the population. Based on data for PI cattle detected between 2006 and 2007, we conducted a case control study to find risk factors associated with the presence of PI cattle. Significantly associated farm level factors for increasing risk of producing PI cattle include; 1) no recent purchase of cattle (between 2004 and 2007) and 2) no prevention of people/animals entering the premises. This study suggests that not...

Bridging the gap between BSE risk assessment and consumer perception of the surveillance system in Japan OAK
KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; HILL, Glen; SAWADA, Manabu; YOSHIDA, Seiko;
Since the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was encountered in Japan in 2001, the country quickly responded with a change from passive to active surveillance. The response has not been a smooth one, though, and news media have contributed to opening the public’s eyes to inadequate behavior from government sources responsible for monitoring and protecting the health of consumers. The resultant information“gap” has served to augment the typical Japanese perceptions of risk assessment, as assessed in surveys from 2003 to 2005. Such false beliefs have caused consumers to call for 100% testing of animals for BSE despite accepted scientific standards which do not support such comprehensive and costly surveillance. Instead, testing agencies...

Environmental awareness among women who collect fuel wood from Lolldaiga Mountains in Kenya OAK
KUBOTA, Satoko; MIZUTANI, Fumi; MATSUMOTO, Kazuha; KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo;
This study aimed to describe the characteristics of villages and women’s households that might induce environmental awareness among fuel wood collecting women in one location of Kenyan dry land. Two probit models were constructed to examine which parameters were associated with two dependent variables, afforestation action and thermal efficient improved cooking oven. Participation in age of respondent, family size and group-activities had a significant effect on two dependent variables. However, age and family size indicated opposite relation on two independent variables. Moreover, it could be considered that one of important factor of improved cooking oven was economically affordability because of large property (i.e. to have cows and lands). On the other...

Farmers' decision making strategies on selecting rootcrop varieties in the Visayas Region, Philippines OAK
ROA, Julie; KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; BERGANTIN, Reynaldo V.; BOLATETE Jr., Dioscoro M.; YAMAUCHI, Akira;
In the Philippines, rootcrops play a significant role in providing livelihood and food security among the resource poor people living in fragile upland environment, which comprise about 65% of the total agricultural land in the country. This paper will present the factors which play into farmers’ decision-making strategies for varietal adoption, particularly of sweetpotato and cassava in Visayas Region, Philippines. Relative importance of factors as they are considered in the farmers’ decisionmaking process vary according to user-orientation (i.e. subsistent, semi-commercial and commercial) because such would have varietal trait specifications, scale of operations, and consequently, resource needs. In largely market or industry-oriented systems, the...

Livestock Production and Foodborne Diseases from Food Animals in Thailand OAK
PADUNGTOD, Pawin; KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; HILL, Glen;
Thailand is a developing nation dependent on agriculture. Due to lack of modern public health practices, she suffers from the consequences of foodborne illnesses. The number of foodborne infection cases has nearly doubled in the past 10 years. Salmonella and Campylobacter pose the greatest risk of bacterial contaminants, mostly from pigs and chickens, and this paper will review livestock production systems and foodborne diseases from cases stemming from these sources. Due to the complexity of the livestock production systems, collection of data to date has been sporadic, but it is clear that controls are needed in slaughterhouse processing methods, and more communication between agencies and surrounding regions is paramount for proper surveillance to have...

Prevalence of bovine teat papillomatosis in Tokachi Area of Hokkaido in Japan OAK
KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; IWASA, Mitsuhiro.

To understand milk processing systems in the Kenya highland and analyze those characteristics, field surveys were conducted in the households of Kikuyu agro-pastoralists and Massai pastoralists. The milk processing systems in the Kenya highland are consisted of both techniques of the fermented milk processing series and the cream separating series. Although butters and butter oils are made for milk fat preserving, there is no cheese...

Vegetational condition and land utilization were surveyed in the large-scale ranch managed by European farmers and a small-scale pastoral area used by indigenous peoples in Laikipia...
